Chambers Burnet Art Gallery Presents
Andréa Stanislav | Lightning Struck Itself
January 15 through March 7, 2010
In her upcoming show at the Burnet Gallery, Andréa Stanislav continues her exploration of the theme of utopia as inseparably linked to dystopia. In “lightning struck itself” her work evolves, with the artist’s signature style becoming a bit darker, complex and more pictorial.
There’s an irony in man’s attempts to achieve the ideal being mapped out through trails of carnage and destruction,” explained Stanislav. “My work is a synthesis of images and events, mined from pop culture and visual art movements from the second half of the 20th century, that explores the failure of utopian impulses. The images I am working with have become more resonate, intriguing and relevant over time to me.”
Fans of Stanislav’s work will recognize influences drawn from the abstract and pop art movements including artists Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol, punk rock bands, such as the Clash, Gang of Four and Television, and the films, “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Performance,” and “Zabrinski Point.”
